First-use onboarding
Help new users reach the point where your product becomes useful. Levered improves the messages and steps between signup and first use, with measurement tied to that first meaningful action.
Would one fewer email help new Lyft drivers?
A Day 6 earnings email reached drivers who were still learning how the platform worked. The team suspected it might create confusion. Removing it without a test could also remove something useful.
Anthony designed a four-week holdout with approximately 16,000 drivers per group. The plan measured support signals alongside hours, rides and earnings, with a decision path for either outcome.
Prior career work at Lyft. This is an experiment-design example; the retained source does not record the final result.

Scope of work
- 1.Map the first-use journey
- 2.Review education, timing and lifecycle triggers
- 3.Design changes around activation and guardrail metrics
What we need to begin
- 1.Product journey, behavioral events and customer-support context
How we evaluate progress
- 1.Activation, repeat usage and support burden within a defined cohort
What you get
- A first-use journey and event map
- A scoped experiment or improvement brief
- A decision record with activation and guardrail findings
- An activation event must represent useful behavior in the product. More emails or clicks are not substitutes for that definition.
Where we might start
Map the steps a new user takes before receiving value. Identify a confusing message or unnecessary step and define the activation and guardrail measures before changing it.
Common questions
Should we remove an onboarding message that looks confusing?+
Investigate its actual effect first. A holdout can compare engagement and confusion signals before a widely used message is removed or replaced.
What counts as activation?+
A behavior that shows the user has reached a meaningful first benefit. It should be defined from the product and customer context, not chosen because an event is easy to track.

Lyft Driver Onboarding: Earnings Email Holdout Design
At Lyft, Anthony Sledge designed a four-week holdout to assess whether a Day 6 earnings email helped new drivers or created confusion. The retained source documents the design, metrics and possible decisions; it does not document the final result.
